What is "freedom" in the New Testament
and how do you stay "free"?
In John 8:36 the Greek words for "made free" are eleutheroo,
meaning "to liberate, acquit, set free, deliver. In the New
Testament the word is used exclusively for Jesus’ setting believers
at liberty from the dominion of sin (see Romans 8:2). The Greek
word for "free" is eleutheros, which means "Freeborn,
exempt from legal obligation, unconstrained. It is the opposite
of enslaved. The word is derived from the verb eleuthomai,
"to come, go," thus describing the freedom to go where
one chooses.
In Galatians 5:1 it tells us to "Stand fast" in the liberty
Christ has given us. It is our choice. Galatians 5:16-25 gives us
guidelines for handling life and the devil as we seek to grow in
the things of God. We are to walk in the Spirit and daily seek to
be led by the Spirit; don't practice the deeds of the flesh,
but rather regularly put them to death in your thoughts and actions,
and then determine to keep in step with the Spirit as He leads us
on into maturity with Him.
