HEARING THE INVISIBLE
By Pastor Jack Hayford

OPTASIA: Meno! Greetings. Come in—sit down. The announcement of your return and our appointment has just preceeded you. I’m expectant about our conversation—and to know of the progress of your assignment.

MENO: Thank you, Optasia. The Father’s summons directed I return from earth for a brief season, particularly to counsel with you regarding the project.

OPTASIA: Let’s see, this concerns the people who call themselves "The Church On The Way," correct? As I recall, they have become a people who please the Father and have permitted us to work with them.

MENO: That is true, but my coming has to do with essential steps they must be taking soon—or that report will become historical rather current. True, they have received our angelic aid to labor with them in spiritual ministry and spiritual warfare. Now, it appears we must decide how we can help alert them.

OPTASIA: Alert them to the Laodicean Syndrome, you mean? Yes...that seems to be a constant threat to the fruitfulness of this mortal breed. You would think the Son’s warning to them in the Revelation would be adequate, but they fall prey to it so often.

MENO: Somehow, the accomplishment of certain works and the walking in a beginning of wisdom tends to lull redeemed humans toward spiritual drowsiness. What is the Father’s directive at this point?

OPTASIA: He has done nothing more at this point than to direct our counseling together. They are your assignment, and, as your own name indicates, the Father has committed Himself to
abide with that people in a distinct way. As your fellow laborer, I have been told to join you in seeking to advance His will.

MENO: Then that accounts for my privilege in working with you in particular, Optasia. For your gift is the awakening and enlargement of
vision...as they on earth call it, "seeing the invisible." My knowledge of this people would recommend our first line of strategy be an effort in our realm, which will goad them in their realm.

OPTASIA: Most of them, I would guess from the report, are either forgetful or ignorant of the fact that their worship, their prayer, their unbound seasons of intercession and supplication, that these—well, has the pastor taught them concerning the fact that their world is invaded with power when they do these things?

MENO: Yes, he has. But some of the more mature ones fall into neglect and sterile habit, and often their new ones—they are a growing flock, with many babes in spiritual understanding—are not as careful to hear the deep truths they should be growing on. However, Optasia, I feel that your gift for restoring and revealing sight is what we need to bring to bear upon their situation.

OPTASIA: Fine. I believe the Father’s mind on the matter is coming to us, and we know we have the Third One’s blessing on our effort, since it is the First’s directive that we take this assignment together....

And like earphones pulled from a stereo, the invisible realm tunes out, I sit back, listening to the buzz of voices outside my door, a passing car outside, and a jangling telephone. My supposedly "real" world crowds in.

But before I set aside my musings, I breathe a quick prayer. Lord, grant my eyes to see the real battles, the real issues, the real dangers, the real opportunities that intersect my path a thousand times a day. Wake me from a sleepy, careless state of mind. Protect me from the hypnotic hum of activities that make the eyes of my heart grow heavy. I ask it for me...that I might warn those I love.
